Cars race for 5-20 miles stretches, called special stages, separated at one minute intervals. Then they transit on public roads, obeying all traffic laws, to the next special stage. Brief repair times, called service, is scheduled once or twice a day between stages. At the end of 300+ miles of racing and transit the team with the lowest elapsed time wins.
