97 Outback Tranny Problems - 2005/10/06 13:40 I just spoke to a friend who owns a Cottman Transmission shop here in SE PA. The 5sp manual in my 97 Outback sport has been making noise for some time. I thought it was a bearing. The noise is in all gears, especially under accelleration. It can now be heard sitting still at idle. It decreases when I press the clutch. He drove it and immediately said it was a missing tooth in a main gear. He checked for used units on the "big link" and found that they are pretty pricey. We both thought being as common as they are that I could find one for 4-5 hundred dollars. Do you have any suggestions?
In addition there is a pretty severe bad bearing sound in the rear differential. The car has only 85000 miles on it so I am a bit dissapointed to say the least. We bought it new so I know the history of the car.
We planned to keep it for the long haul. Now I'm starting to wonder.

Re:97 Outback Tranny Problems - 2005/10/06 14:15 Honestly, I drive my 2001 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS 5MT pretty spirited most of the time. I have won SCCA Regional Autocross Solo II STS championship racing class and Rookie of the Year with my Subie, and with proper maintenance and the stock transmission I have 80,000 miles on it right now without a single problem. People race continuously on WRX STi transmissions without a problem. So, it is not Subaru transmissions in general. But, Subaru AWD transmissions are not cheap to replace in general, and unfortunately if yours does have a problem early it can give a bad impression of Subaru as a whole. But, a friend of mine just replaced his transmission with a low mileage used transmission from a 1997 Legacy for about $700, so I am not sure where your Subaru contact is getting his prices from.
