Okay, in your case the hardware and OS are trashed.  It does sound a good time to buy a new computer.
I bought my fiancee an iBook in August. Awesome laptop. The screen is beautiful, the wireless connection is amazing, it runs completely silent, lasts ~6 hours on the battery with moderate use, and never ever has a problem. Plus, the user interface is absolutely incredible. My fiancee literally charges her iBook up overnight, goes to the university during the day, uses it on and off throughout the day (wireless), comes home and uses it all night (wireless), plugs it in overnight and starts out the next day again with no problems. Pretty cool laptop. Depending on your use, such as video games, you may want a PowerBook but for everything except gaming the iBook is perfect.
Like I said, when Apple completely moves to Intel/AMD, I'm switching to Apple.
