Can someone recommend me a gravel setup - 2008/11/18 12:58 Like the titel says, can someone recommend me a decent gravel wheel and tyre setup for my 325iX that is somewhat reasonably priced? I'd like to keep the 15x7 that it's running right now. Figured this would probably be the place to ask...

Re:Can someone recommend me a gravel setup - 2008/11/19 08:15 Rallycross? Or you just want to bang around on gravel tires a bit?

Re:Can someone recommend me a gravel setup - 2008/11/19 20:20 I'm looking to schedule some rallycross events next year, as my CMC autocross schedule permits.

Re:Can someone recommend me a gravel setup - 2008/11/20 14:17 You should be able to buy some used 15" gravels from a race team that would fit, no problem. Most 15" gravels that Subarus use should fit easy. Hell, Matt might even have some still lying around. Stock Tyre size for the 325ix was 205/55/15 I think.

As for wheels...eh. Just get some 15" steelies. Or another set of stock alloys.

Re:Can someone recommend me a gravel setup - 2008/11/21 13:55 Yeah, 205/55-15 was correct for the iX. I guess I'll probably go for some steelies, although I've seen some tasty deals on some Team Dynamics wheels, and some Compmotive wheels out there. As for tyres, that's a bit more challenging as all the ads i've seen are like 2 years old. Oh well, that's the fun of the chase I guess. How are the guys in NER Ty? I've seen the rally jeep kicking around at a CMC meet here or there, and I've never gotten to introduce myself. I drive the number 143 Volvo 850.

Re:Can someone recommend me a gravel setup - 2008/11/21 21:27 Ah, I see I see.

The NER Rallycross guys are a great bunch of people. A very relaxed, easy going group of people. There's been a few times where someone's car has broken, and you'll see 6 or 7 seven people getting it back together. For example: someone's car lost it's clutch mast cyl. on the way to RAL weekend this summer. Scott and Chris went out to the nearest auto parts store that had the part, and stayed up pretty late at night putting the part in and getting the car moving again while the owner slept in a motel.

Awesome group of people to race with.

As for getting tyres. You could try the Last Ditch Racing guys up here in Maine. Matt may still have some like I said. Ted Mendham may have some http://www.rensport.net/ Tim Penasack might also have some. I'm sure there are others. Just email them looking for used gravels.

Re:Can someone recommend me a gravel setup - 2008/11/24 13:15 I'm all out of tires, thank god.

Any active team has a boat load of used. In the NE Area, Last ditch, Buffum, VT Car, Bacon, Mendams Are all potential sources for used rubber. The big guys might not want to bother, but everyone has used rubber.

The bees knees best set would be grooved Michelin 80s, or the BF equivalent (narrow medium compound, grooved for the mud, turf, or sand of rally X)

My favorite winter tire in loo of gravel tire was the Winterforce. I used to run them all year on my practice car.

Steelies are cheap, more resilient than you would expect, and easy to pound back to round. If you have 200 you're itching to spend on wheels, put it towards new tires.

Re:Can someone recommend me a gravel setup - 2008/11/24 19:37 Yeah, I'm really in the planning stage as of right now, but thanks for the point in the right direction in the way of tires, and who to ask about them.
As of now, I'm planning on doing the gravel gripzors, steelies, and then I'm going to get a skid plate fabbed up, and put on some mud flaps. Probably going to install a harness or at least one of those little seat belt lock things. I wanna do engine and trans mounts this winter over christmas break. Anything else that you guys would recommend I do before I take the car out for rallx?

Re:Can someone recommend me a gravel setup - 2008/11/25 10:12 Do a good once or twice over for things that could come loose or disable you.

You could not imagine that things that fell apart on my Audi at its first event. I was definately glad that I had brought the Jeep along as backup.
