Re:finished! - 2006/04/11 09:19
New York was great! as far as the car went. Eve's biggst problem was that the switch for the intercooler water spray kept coming loose. The new water injection system worked without a hitch. The 6 speed syncros are a bit shakey, 4th seemed to pop out a couple times, but it'sa six speed, so I'mm confident that it will last through Oregon.
Tarmac is something different entierly. My braking distance from top speed seemed to be about 50 meters. I was running the 4.44 gear ratio (in preperation for Oregon, so the top speed we hit was 117. Pretty slow concitering people were hitting 138.
Jermey Wimpey was great as co-driver. He's really good. I had to get him broken out of the "calm steady readin of the notes" mindset that co-drivers have bashed into their heads, but besides that it went very well.
I met Nicky Grist, and had him sign Eve's roll cage.
We did have a car coming at us on stage, a silver focus I believe. We were on this super fast section of yellow line divided road, and we came out of a series of 100+ turns into a 500 meter straight. I thoulgh there was a car parked in the road, but then I realized it was coming at us at 40, just like they were going to get groceries. I was completly shocked. I thoulght we mist have gotten off the stage road somehow. All Jermey could say was "stay in your lane". So I coasted by him, got back on the gas, got to the finish, and yelled myself hoarse at the 2 corse workers, and police man (parked across the road with his lights on) who were suposed to be making sure that exact thing didn't happen.
To be honest the whole event was marked by some truly incompetent organizing. Times for friday weren't up untill saturday, chicaines were randomly set up, and taken down. Really, there were chicaines on stage that wern't in the notes, and some that should have been there that were nowhere. Finally, we finled an inquiery and it got lost, only to show up covered in mud. Oh, and at the finish, the radio DJ announced, " and the winner is..." and then noone could figure out who the winner was . I'm still not sure. Probably Seamus.
