bully clutch question - 2007/05/24 12:50 was wondering some clutch questions. Bully said for rally racing application this would be a good setup

350HP Max. Higher Torque
Stage 4 pressure plate matched to stage 2 disc sprung full facing Kevlar on both sides. 6 puck

what are the advantages/disadvantages of mismatching stages

Stages are different, as far as I can tell, from manufacturer to manufacturer.

But in your typical single plate clutch system you have 3 components pressure plate clutch disk, and flywheel. To get more holding power you can either increase your clamping force by upgrading your presure plate, or increase the friction of your clutch disk.

Stage 4 pressure plate sounds like real mean son of a bitch. It might hold like hell, but it might make for a very stiff pedal. I like a stiff pedal myself, but my girlfriend hated to drive my car.

It sounds to me like bully wansn't lying however. That setup seems like it would work.

For the longest time I was using an Exedy 3 puck, I'm pretty sure copper ceramic, with a stock STi pressure plate. Then I moved up to a Exedy pressure plate as well. ( as a interesting note, Exedy makes the STi clutch system)

This has turned into a ramble, but to answer your question, mixing stages is really common, and it lets you fine tune the clamp, longjevity, feel, inertia, and color of you clutch package.

Re:bully clutch question - 2007/05/25 09:53 would a 3, 4 or 6 puck be more beneficial for performance rallying?

I know a 6 compared to a 3 has more surface area to grip, so would that mean a longer lasting, yet less touchy clutch?

Thank again Matt for all your help

Re:bully clutch question - 2007/05/26 10:11 Oddly enough the puck number is more for reduced inertia than anything else. I bet other manufactures do it, but I know for sure Exeddy sells 2 versions of the 3 puck, a thick and a thin version. The same thing, except one has an extra mm of matierial, which must weigh all of .000000000000000000000025 of an milligram.

There is also more cooling area exposed on reduced puck cluches.

someone who has a better grip on physics should correct me on this, but I believe that the pressure plate applies the same force over the smaller area of the 3 puck that it would on the 6 puck, resulting in pretty much the same clamp load regardless. But you are correct that the 6 puck should last longer.

I have never used a clutch for very long because once they glaze the pressure plate and flywheel, they just don't retain their holding power. You can resurface the flywheel, but then you get start to see warpage issues earlier.

In theory the fewer the pucks, the more geared twards racing a clutch plate is.

If you are serious about racing, you are going to have to get used to touchy, tempermental, demanding systems in your car.

Most race car drivers train to be fast in a certain car in certain cercumstances. As a rally driver You must be like the ninja, prepared in all cirmunstances. (Someone must have a ninja smiley?)
